Fewer than forty paintings are securely attributed to Johannes Vermeer, a scarcity that has made his work among the most frequently imitated in European art. The most consequential imitator, Han van Meegeren, sold invented Vermeers to museums and to a senior Nazi official during the Second World War, and was believed by the leading authorities of the day. His success was not accidental: he ground his own pigments to seventeenth-century recipes, painted over genuine canvases of the period, and produced works that answered what scholars of the time expected an undiscovered Vermeer to look like.
The technical means of detection have advanced considerably since. Pigment analysis can date a material to within a few decades of its manufacture, and the presence of a compound synthesized in the twentieth century settles a question that connoisseurship cannot. Infrared reflectography reveals the underdrawing beneath the paint, radiography exposes reused canvases, and tree-ring dating establishes the age of a panel. Auction houses and museums increasingly require documented provenance, and shared databases allow a claimed ownership history to be checked against records of wartime confiscation and sale. A single laboratory in Amsterdam now examines several hundred works a year.
Yet none of this has removed the problem, and in some respects it has merely displaced it. Full technical examination costs more than many works are worth, so it is applied to major attributions and rarely to the volume of minor pictures through which most forgeries actually pass. Forgers read the same literature as the laboratories and now source period materials deliberately. And because doubt attaches to a picture far more easily than it can be dispelled, a contested attribution can strip a genuine work of its market value long before any examination establishes what it is.

Vermeer’s small surviving output has made his work a persistent target for forgery, most notably by Han van Meegeren, who deceived leading authorities by grinding period pigments, reusing canvases of the era, and painting what scholars expected an unknown Vermeer to be. Detection has since become far more capable, with pigment dating, infrared and radiographic imaging, tree-ring analysis of panels, and shared provenance records settling questions connoisseurship could not. Yet full examination costs more than most pictures are worth and is seldom applied to the minor works through which forgeries usually pass, forgers now obtain period materials deliberately, and suspicion alone can destroy the value of an authentic painting.

- 「Fewer than forty paintings are securely attributed to Johannes Vermeer, a scarcity that has made his work among the most frequently imitated in European art. The most consequential imitator, Han van Meegeren, sold invented Vermeers to museums and to a senior Nazi official during the Second World War, and was believed by the leading authorities of the day. His success was not accidental: he ground his own pigments to seventeenth-century recipes, painted over genuine canvases of the period, and produced works that answered what scholars of the time expected an undiscovered Vermeer to look like.」
- 「Vermeer’s small surviving output has made his work a persistent target for forgery, most notably by Han van Meegeren, who deceived leading authorities by grinding period pigments, reusing canvases of the era, and painting what scholars expected an unknown Vermeer to be.」
most notably by …
- 「The technical means of detection have advanced considerably since. A single laboratory in Amsterdam now examines several hundred works a year.」
- 「Detection has since become far more capable, with pigment dating, infrared and radiographic imaging, tree-ring analysis of panels, and shared provenance records settling questions connoisseurship could not.」
settling questions connoisseurship could notで「目利きでは決められなかった」という対比を置きます。
- 「Yet none of this has removed the problem, and in some respects it has merely displaced it. Full technical examination costs more than many works are worth, so it is applied to major attributions and rarely to the volume of minor pictures through which most forgeries actually pass. Forgers read the same literature as the laboratories and now source period materials deliberately. And because doubt attaches to a picture far more easily than it can be dispelled, a contested attribution can strip a genuine work of its market value long before any examination establishes what it is.」
- 「Yet full examination costs more than most pictures are worth and is seldom applied to the minor works through which forgeries usually pass, forgers now obtain period materials deliberately, and suspicion alone can destroy the value of an authentic painting.」
