Almost all hydrogen used in industry today is manufactured, either by stripping it from natural gas, which releases carbon dioxide, or by splitting water with electricity, which is clean but expensive. A third source has attracted sudden attention: hydrogen generated underground by reactions between water and iron-rich rock, which then accumulates in geological traps in much the same way as gas. Because it requires neither an energy input nor a feedstock, deposits of this kind could in principle supply hydrogen at a fraction of present costs, and exploration licenses have been issued across France, Australia, Mali, and the American Midwest.

The response has been rapid. Several governments have written natural hydrogen into their mining codes, resolving the legal question of who owns a gas that nobody previously thought worth claiming. Geologists have adapted seismic and geochemical methods developed for petroleum to identify likely traps, and start-ups backed by venture capital have begun drilling. A well in Mali has supplied a local power station for years, and early flow tests elsewhere have been encouraging enough to draw investment from established energy companies that had until recently dismissed the idea.

Nevertheless, the case remains unproven in ways that matter commercially. It is not yet known whether reservoirs recharge quickly enough to sustain production, or whether most accumulations are too small and too widely scattered to justify a well. Hydrogen molecules are small enough to embrittle steel and escape through pipework built for methane, so distribution would demand networks that do not exist. The greater risk may be one of attention: capital and political enthusiasm directed toward an unconfirmed resource are capital and enthusiasm withdrawn from technologies already working. Several national programs have been rescheduled on the strength of forecasts that no producing field yet supports.

Industrial hydrogen is currently obtained either from natural gas, which emits carbon dioxide, or by electrolysis, which is costly, so evidence that hydrogen forms naturally underground and collects in geological traps has generated considerable interest. Governments have amended mining law to establish ownership, exploration methods borrowed from petroleum have identified promising formations, and drilling has begun with venture and corporate backing. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether such reservoirs replenish fast enough or occur in concentrations worth exploiting, existing pipelines cannot carry hydrogen without embrittlement, and enthusiasm for an unconfirmed resource diverts funding from technologies already in service.

  • 「Almost all hydrogen used in industry today is manufactured, either by stripping it from natural gas, which releases carbon dioxide, or by splitting water with electricity, which is clean but expensive. A third source has attracted sudden attention: hydrogen generated underground by reactions between water and iron-rich rock, which then accumulates in geological traps in much the same way as gas. Because it requires neither an energy input nor a feedstock, deposits of this kind could in principle supply hydrogen at a fraction of present costs, and exploration licenses have been issued across France, Australia, Mali, and the American Midwest.」

  • 「Industrial hydrogen is currently obtained either from natural gas, which emits carbon dioxide, or by electrolysis, which is costly, so evidence that hydrogen forms naturally underground and collects in geological traps has generated considerable interest.」

  • 「The response has been rapid. A well in Mali has supplied a local power station for years, and early flow tests elsewhere have been encouraging enough to draw investment from established energy companies that had until recently dismissed the idea.」

  • 「Governments have amended mining law to establish ownership, exploration methods borrowed from petroleum have identified promising formations, and drilling has begun with venture and corporate backing.」

Governments have amended … methods have identified … drilling has begun

  • 「Nevertheless, the case remains unproven in ways that matter commercially. Several national programs have been rescheduled on the strength of forecasts that no producing field yet supports.」

  • 「Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether such reservoirs replenish fast enough or occur in concentrations worth exploiting, existing pipelines cannot carry hydrogen without embrittlement, and enthusiasm for an unconfirmed resource diverts funding from technologies already in service.」
