POINTS: Individual freedom, long-term side effects, New Variant, Business Viability, Public Health, Normal Life

AGREE or DISAGREE; Should COVID-19vaccination be mandatory?

POINTS: Business Viability / Public Health / Normal Life

Introduction

With the COVID-19 vaccination being the only effective measure for preventing the pandemic disease infection and returning to daily life, it is reasonable to make it mandatory, particularly in countries where the vaccination rates are not high enough.

Discussion 1

Many businesses in the tourism and hospitality industries or retailers have gone bankrupt or been financially suffering worldwide in response to lockdown, which is one of the control measures against the coronavirus disease. That is partially causing the increasing number of homeless people, or even worse, suicides.

Discussion 2

Our lives also have drastically changed. For example, schools have cancelled many annual events, such as sports carnivals and school excursions. Children have missed out on making life-long memories. Social engagements have regularly been restricted over the past two years. Had it not been for the needs of the measures, it would have been easier for many people to maintain their mental and physical health.

Discussion 3

Vaccination could, of course, lower the number of infected people. Even where breakthroughs happened, their symptoms could be eased. Some side effects may be experienced, from high fever to death, but the risk of dying from COVID-19 is much higher than from vaccination. The more people got vaccinated, the less pressure would be on hospitals and medical institutions.

Conclusion

Overall, some people might have side effects, but considering how many people have been directly and indirectly suffering from COVID-19, vaccination should be compulsory in countries where the vaccination rate is lower.

AGREE or DISAGREE; Should COVID-19 vaccination be mandatory?

POINTS: Individual Freedom / Long-term Side Effects / New Variant

Introduction

It is widely recognised that vaccination is the most effective way of preventing COVID-19 infection or severe symptoms. Making it compulsory, however, seems too rushed for the following reasons.

Discussion 1

COVID-19 vaccines haven’t been properly authorised yet, only permitted to use for emergency cases. No one yet knows whether the vaccinations for COVID-19 would have long-term adverse effects on the human body. Indeed, most vaccinated people had some side effects, which is very unusual for authorised vaccines of other diseases.

Discussion 2

Pfizer, one of the major providers, also doesn’t know how long the efficacy of the vaccine lasts. Besides, new variants of COVID-19 and subspecies of a variant have been arising. Again, nobody knows if the current vaccines would protect against variants that will emerge. We also would not know how many boosters we must have. Vaccines may harm our health after multiple doses in a short period.

Discussion 3

What’s more, there may be more measures governments can implement before making vaccination mandatory. They could require anti-vaxxers to test negative with both a rapid antigen test and a PCR test before engaging in social activities. I think anti-vaxxers would prefer doing those tests rather than getting vaccinated. COVID vaccine mandates seem to be ignoring individual freedom and leading to despotism.

Conclusion

Although many people are fed up with lockdown and other restrictions for COVID-19, making vaccination compulsory is debatable. The final decision should be up to each individual while unknown factors about vaccines still exist.
